The BVI Cancer Society has reinforced its dedication to the fight against cancer with a generous donation of a Breast Coil valued at $55,500, bringing its total contribution to the Imaging Unit of the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital to an impressive $112,388.
This latest donation follows an earlier contribution made on October 18, 2024, when the organization gifted an MRI Contrast Injector worth $55,888 in honour of the late Kirima Shameka Forbes, a former Cancer Society member who lost her battle with breast cancer. The MRI Contrast Injector plays a crucial role in enhancing the accuracy of MRI scans, particularly in detecting cancers and other abnormalities.
During the October ceremony, Dr. Aasha Marie Flax-Miller, Head of the Imaging Department at the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA), highlighted the urgent need for a Breast Coil. This specialized device significantly improves the quality of breast MRI scans by providing clearer, more detailed imaging, which is critical for early detection and accurate diagnosis.
In response, BVI Cancer Society President Gloria Fahie embraced the challenge, and shortly after, an anonymous donor stepped forward to fully cover the cost of the Breast Coil.
“This donation reaffirms our commitment to improving cancer care in the BVI,” said Fahie. “We are honoured to support the Imaging Unit and provide resources that can aid in early detection and treatment. The fight against cancer is a community effort, and we are grateful to our donors who continue to make these contributions possible.”
Dr. Flax-Miller emphasized the significant impact of these donations, stating, “The MRI Contrast Injector and Breast Coil will enhance our ability to detect and diagnose breast cancer at an earlier stage, improving treatment outcomes. The support of the Cancer Society and its donors continues to prove invaluable to our work.”
Acting Chief Executive Officer of BVIHSA, Dr. June Samuel, also expressed gratitude for the Cancer Society’s efforts.
“We deeply appreciate the generosity of the BVI Cancer Society and its donors. Their contributions not only enhance our imaging capabilities but also reinforce the importance of early detection in the fight against cancer. This is yet another powerful example of what can be achieved when the community comes together for a common cause,” Dr. Samuel stated.
The BVI Cancer Society remains a pillar of cancer awareness, prevention, and support in the territory.
