The British Virgin Islands (BVI) has been selected to host the 2025 CARILEC Lineworkers Rodeo, Symposium, and Field Safety Training, marking a historic first for the territory.
The BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) announced that the prestigious annual event will take place from April 25–27, bringing together top lineworkers from 33 CARILEC member utilities across the Caribbean.
The CARILEC Lineworkers Rodeo is a premier event that highlights the skills, expertise, and safety practices of lineworkers, who are essential to ensuring reliable electricity transmission to homes, businesses, and communities. The competition and training sessions focus on teamwork, safe work practices, and regional collaboration—key pillars of the industry.
Strengthening Regional Energy Resilience
This year’s Lineworkers Rodeo follows Lineworker Appreciation Day, observed on April 18, which recognizes the dedication and sacrifices of those who work under hazardous conditions to keep the power grid operational. The Rodeo also plays a critical role in CARILEC’s Disaster Assistance Programme, equipping participants with the skills needed for rapid deployment in Caribbean nations affected by hurricanes and natural disasters.
Dr. Neil Smith, General Manager of BVIEC, expressed pride and excitement over the BVI being chosen to host the event.
“We are extremely proud to welcome CARILEC and its participating member utilities to the British Virgin Islands. Hosting the 2025 Lineworkers Rodeo, Symposium, and Field Safety Training is not only a historic moment for the BVI but also a testament to our commitment to excellence in the energy sector. Our lineworkers are the backbone of our power infrastructure, and this event underscores the importance of safety and skill development for all who work to keep the lights on across the region,” stated Dr. Smith.
A Commitment to Safety and Training
Safety remains a top priority for the BVIEC, and this event will serve as an invaluable opportunity for lineworkers to enhance their skills, engage in hands-on training, and share best practices with their regional peers.
Melony James, Occupational Health and Safety Manager at BVIEC, emphasized the importance of safety and continuous learning in the industry.
She said, “Safety remains our top priority and is at the heart of everything we do at the BVIEC. We are dedicated to fostering a culture of continuous learning and collaboration among our team members and those across the Caribbean. The Rodeo and Symposium provide an invaluable opportunity for lineworkers to practice safe work methods, engage in hands-on training, and exchange best practices with their peers.”
BVI Public Encouraged to Support Local Team
The BVIEC team will once again compete in the Lineworkers Rodeo, where they have an opportunity to win the event for a third consecutive year. James encouraged residents to show their support and rally behind the local team.
“Your presence will be a powerful show of support for the hardworking lineworkers who play a critical role in keeping our communities powered and safe. The energy and encouragement of the crowd can make all the difference as they demonstrate their skills, speed, and teamwork in this thrilling competition,” she stated.
As the BVI prepares to host this landmark event, anticipation is building for what promises to be an exciting showcase of skill, dedication, and teamwork among the region’s best lineworkers.
