CIBC Caribbean Walk for the Cure 2024 Raises $67,000

The 2024 CIBC Caribbean Walk for the Cure campaign has once again demonstrated the power of community collaboration, raising an impressive $67,000 to support cancer research and the fight against cancer in the British Virgin Islands (BVI).

At a special cheque presentation at the CIBC Caribbean Retail Banking Hall, the BVI Cancer Society and National Epidemiologist, Ms. Harmony Brewley-Massiah received contributions to further their critical work in cancer support and research and data analysis. The event, which celebrated the collective efforts of corporate sponsors, volunteers, and participants, was marked by heartfelt remarks from distinguished stakeholders and medical professionals.

Ms. Vernecia Holder, Head of Corporate International Banking, delivered the opening remarks with Mr. Fabian Devonish, Walk Manager and Country Head, highlighting the longstanding impact of the Walk for the Cure campaign.

“This initiative has become a cornerstone of our corporate social responsibility efforts, reinforcing our commitment to fighting cancer and supporting those affected by it,” said Devonish. “We’ve come a long way from the initial $1250 we raised with the first Walk for the Cure effort in 2012 to the $67,000 raised 12 years later. We couldn’t have done it without the support of our sponsors, supporters and event participants. This is the power of community, and we look forward to pushing towards achieving the $75,000 target together in 2025.”

A cheque of $57,000 was presented to Ms. Gloria Fahie, President of the BVI Cancer Society, who expressed profound gratitude for the continued support. “These funds are vital in providing assistance to cancer patients and their families, as well as in raising awareness about early detection and prevention,” Fahie remarked. “The continued support from the community is essential in combating cancer in the BVI. We are truly grateful to CIBC Caribbean in championing the cause and we thank you, the sponsors and all participants for making this donation possible. We encourage you to keep walking with us.”

In a significant step toward facilitating cancer research and analysis in the BVI, a separate $10,000 cheque was awarded to National Epidemiologist, Ms. Harmony Brewley-Massiah. These funds will facilitate vital data collection and analysis which will be available to the BVI Cancer Registry, ensuring more comprehensive tracking and research into cancer trends within the territory.

“Without reliable data, we are fighting in the dark,” said Ms. Brewley-Massiah. “One of the most powerful tools we have in this fight is a well-established cancer registry and dedicated research efforts. By systematically collecting and analysing cancer data we can analyse trends, improve early detection and develop targeted prevention strategies. The cancer registry and the associated research initiatives have commenced this year. It is a collaborative effort between Health, National Health Insurance and the BVI Cancer Society. This will help us to be better equipped to fight smarter, push for better health options and to give families hope.”

Dr. Domnick Frazer, Medical Director of the National Health Insurance (NHI), also shared insights on the importance of data-driven healthcare initiatives, emphasizing the need for research to improve cancer care in the territory.

“We are happy that this research and analysis initiative has finally started,” said Frazer. “We are trying to promote regular annual checkups. We had at least 53 new cases last year and the three leading causes were colorectal cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer. These are three treatable cancers that we can diagnose early but persons are coming to us at very late stages. So we want to promote screening and early detection, and we are happy to support the efforts of the Walk for the Cure in helping to raise awareness and getting the word out.”

Closing remarks delivered by Nelson Ramirez, Relationship Manager, Platinum Banking, Person & Business Banking, underscored the collective effort that made this achievement possible.
