Deputy Governor Mr. David Archer, Jr. has assumed the role of Acting Governor of the Virgin Islands during the absence of His Excellency, Governor Daniel Pruce.
Governor Pruce is currently out of the territory until September 22, 2024, and Archer will serve in this capacity until September 22, 2024.
Archer’s appointment as Acting Governor is in accordance with section 37 (1) (a) of the Virgin Islands Constitution Order, 2007. This provision outlines the process for appointing the Deputy Governor to act in the Governor’s stead during periods of absence or when the office is vacant.
The section states, “During any period when the office of Governor is vacant, or the Governor is absent from the Virgin Islands or is for any other reason unable to perform the functions of his or her office, the Deputy Governor shall, during His Majesty’s pleasure, act in the office of Governor and shall perform the functions of that office accordingly.”
As Acting Governor, Archer will carry out all the duties and responsibilities of the Governor’s Office, ensuring that the administration of the Virgin Islands continues seamlessly during Governor Pruce’s absence. This includes overseeing the execution of government functions, representing the Crown in the territory, and providing leadership in critical areas of governance.
