Opposition Leader Hon. Ronnie Skelton has raised concerns about the source of funding for the Government’s sponsorship of the upcoming Vybz Kartel concert, scheduled for March 2025.
The event, organized by YOLO Promotions, is set to feature the Jamaican dancehall artist in the British Virgin Islands for the first time.
Skelton’s comments follow the recent announcement of the concert and the disapproval expressed by two government ministers regarding the use of taxpayer funds to support the event. Deputy Premier Hon. Lorna Smith and Minister for Communication and Works Hon. Kye Rymer have both voiced their opposition to the government’s financial involvement in the show.
In an interview with ZBVI Radio on Tuesday, October 8, Skelton questioned the source of the rumoured quarter-million-dollar sponsorship, particularly in light of the government’s recent financial mismanagement. He referenced the oversight of more than $13 million, which occurred following the implementation of the new salary structure for public servants and other government-funded projects he believes have not yielded results.
Skelton added that with the territory already facing serious financial challenges, the use of public money for entertainment sponsorships is questionable. He expressed his frustration with the premier’s priorities, especially amid current economic uncertainties and unresolved issues facing the Virgin Islands.
The debate over government sponsorship of the Vybz Kartel concert continues to stir controversy, as residents and officials alike weigh in on the proper use of taxpayer money in the Virgin Islands.
