Premier Dr. the Hon. Natalio Wheatley recently outlined the need for the British Virgin Islands to grow its population in order to meet its economic aspirations, emphasizing that migration would play a central role in this growth.
At a press conference, Wheatley stressed that the territory’s future economic success depends on expanding its workforce to support key sectors, particularly tourism. “Everybody needs to accept that,” Wheatley remarked, referring to the need for a more diverse, expanded population to meet the demands of an evolving economy.
Wheatley, whose administration has made strides in updating immigration policies, explained that achieving a more business-friendly environment requires comprehensive labour policies that align with these changes.
The Premier highlighted that while it is crucial to train and equip BVIslanders with the skills needed to take on opportunities in the workforce, there is also a pressing need for businesses to have access to the necessary human resources.
Wheatley acknowledged the challenges that come with balancing local employment opportunities with the influx of migrant workers but reiterated that growth in population and workforce is essential for the territory’s prosperity.
With projections showing increased demand for workers in tourism and other industries, the Premier emphasized that now is the time for strategic planning to ensure the BVI can accommodate its expanding economy.
