Opposition Legislator Hon. Myron Walwyn has expressed strong disapproval of the recently opened Trellis Bay Rest Stop facility on Beef Island, describing it as inadequate for the calibre of tourists and residents who frequently use the area.
Speaking during a House of Assembly sitting, Walwyn said he felt “shame like a dog” upon seeing the facility, which serves as an arrival and departure lounge with shade, seating, and restroom facilities.
Walwyn criticized the size and design of the facility, arguing that it fails to meet the expectations of high-end tourists and residents alike. He emphasized the need for the government to prioritize the development of high-quality infrastructure across the territory.
The legislator’s comments underline growing concerns about the territory’s ability to provide facilities that match the expectations of its clientele, particularly in areas central to the tourism sector. Walwyn urged the government to invest in facilities that reflect the Virgin Islands’ reputation as a premier travel destination, ensuring they satisfy both visitors and residents.
The Trellis Bay Rest Stop was designed to enhance the experience of passengers traveling via ferry or private vessels, but Walwyn’s critique raises questions about whether the facility can deliver on that promise.
