MATHER CRITICIZES GOV’T PRIORITIES AMID SOCIAL CONCERNS

Territorial At-Large Representative Stacey Mather called for a comprehensive approach to youth development, criticizing the government’s prioritization of entertainment spending over crucial social programs.

Speaking at a recent press conference, Mather emphasized that while parents bear great responsibility for young people’s development, they require robust social support systems to succeed in raising the next generation.

The lawmaker expressed frustration over the delayed national crime strategy which was announced by Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley in 2023. Mather called on the National Security Council to address gaps in youth support services.

To that end, Mather criticized the government’s pattern of making funds available for event sponsorships and concerts while key social issues, like addressing the root causes of crime, lack crucial investment.

Mather also urged men in the territory to create opportunities for youth engagement and empowerment, particularly for young males, urging men to take a more active role in the community in youth development.
