The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at 7:19 a.m. local time off the coast of Ponce and Peñuelas – a region that has been hit by a series of earthquakes since late 2019.

The earthquake and several aftershocks were also felt in the capital of Puerto Rico, San Juan.

After today’s tremors no tsunami advisory has been issued.

Ponce Mayor Maria “Mayita” Melendez said several buildings were damaged.

Officials are assessing the earthquake’s effects and checking on citizens, she said.
