North Georgetown Primary School student Samuel Barkoye and Rovin Lall of Stella Marris Primary have topped the 2020 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) in Guyana.
Education Minister Priya Manickchand annouced the NGSA results today.
Both students scored 525 points, which is just three short of the highest possible score.
Barkoye and Lall will be attending Queen’s College.
Alexander Singh came third with 524 points and he will also be attending Queen’s College.
Manickchand congratulated all students for their accomplishments and urged them to continue to persue their dreams.
The minister also thanked parents and teachers for providing students with the support they needed to achieve success during the pandemic.
She reminded students that a place at the nation’s top schools such as Queen’s College, St Joseph’s and Bishop’s High School does not determine how much of a success they can be.
“What we say here does not determine who you are, it does not define who you are, it does not say whether you are bright or not. It is really that we cannot fit more children into these schools,” Manickchand stated.
The minister noted that some of the less prestigious schools such as Brickdam Secondary School have a 90 percent pass rate at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC).
She promised that schools across Guyana will be improved to ensure all students have equal access to resources.
An education ministry official, who spoke at the media conference, revealed that there were improved performaces in Science, Social Studies and English while there was a decrease in Mathematics scores.
Approximately 14,032 children wrote the exam on July 1 and 2.
Parents can access their child’s results on the ministry’s website.
