Elmore Stoutt High School teacher Colin Bynoe Jr. was taken into custody by police in Guyana following a vehicular accident in Region 5 which left a taxi driver dead.
According to reports, about 4:30 am on Saturday, Bynoe was driving a black SUV on a public road in D’Edward village when he crashed into the taxi of 30-year-old Salim Yusuf.
Investigations so far have revealed that Yusuf was travelling westbound along the southern side of the road while Bynoe was travelling in the opposite direction along the northern side.
Reports say that at the scene, Bynoe was recorded claiming that the accident was caused because Yusuf drove into his path. However, following inspection of video footage retrieved from CCTV in the area, reports say that Bynoe was seen speeding and appeared to lose control of his vehicle while attempting to execute a turn. A third vehicle at the scene managed to narrowly escape collision as Bynoe’s SUV skidded over the southern driving lane and collided with Yusuf’s car.
Both vehicles were severely damaged following the collision, however, while Bynoe walked away with what has been described as minor injuries, accounts from the scene say that Yusuf was discovered in an unconscious state immediately after the accident and was visibly bleeding from his wounds.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Fort Wellington Hospital.
Bynoe was subsequently released from police custody without charge.
Investigations are ongoing.
