The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reports increasing circulation of SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) across the Americas in recent weeks.
In a recent epidemiological update, PAHO said higher levels of acute respiratory infections have been observed since late August 2023, especially in North America, the Andean region, Brazil, and the Southern Cone.
The COVID-19 situation remains at moderate to high levels in North America, with the United States and Canada seeing elevated hospitalizations. Influenza cases have also surpassed seasonal thresholds in these countries, along with a pronounced rise in RSV.
Some Caribbean nations like Belize and Saint Lucia are recording SARS-CoV-2 activity above epidemic levels. Countries such as Bolivia, Ecuador, and Venezuela continue to see high COVID-19 circulation and/or influenza transmission.
PAHO advised that health systems remain vigilant and prepared to handle potential upticks in respiratory illnesses. It recommends countries reinforce surveillance, event-based reporting, and testing capacity for viral pathogens.
Protocols for clinical management of severe cases, use of antivirals where appropriate, and targeted vaccination are also highlighted as key actions in PAHO’s guidance. With multiple respiratory viruses co-circulating, PAHO stressed integrated messaging is needed to promote prevention measures like hand hygiene, masks, and avoidance of crowds when sick.
