LIAT 2020 DEBUTS WITH THREE-ISLAND ROUTE

LIAT 2020, the revived version of the iconic Caribbean airline, launched its inaugural flight on August 6, marking a new era in regional aviation.

The flight departed from V.C. Bird International Airport in Antigua at 11:30 a.m., bound for St. Lucia, carrying dignitaries and media representatives.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda, speaking at the launch ceremony, emphasised the airline’s importance in strengthening economic ties and regional relationships.

LIAT 2020, a collaboration between Regional Governments and Nigerian airline Air Peace, begins operations with seven aircraft. The airline currently offers three weekly flights connecting Antigua and Barbuda, St. Lucia, and Barbados.

Bookings are currently accepted only via telephone or email, as the airline’s website is still under development.

Prime Minister Browne announced plans to allocate $10 million by year-end to pay severance to former LIAT 1974 staff. He urged former employees to consider accepting this offer, noting it wouldn’t prevent them from seeking additional compensation from other shareholder governments.

The airline’s return is viewed as crucial for regional integration and economic development. Its performance in the coming months will be closely watched as it aims to re-establish itself as a reliable and sustainable carrier in the Caribbean aviation sector.
