The Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines has announced a US$10,000 gift to Vincentian Olympic athlete Shafiqua Maloney in recognition of her groundbreaking performance at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves made the announcement during a welcome reception for Maloney, who has returned home after her stellar season on the international stage. The 25-year-old athlete made history by becoming the first Vincentian to qualify for an Olympic final, finishing fourth in the 800 meters event.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the need for continued financial support for Maloney.
In addition to the monetary award, a special celebration is being planned for October to honour Maloney’s achievements. The Prime Minister expressed his desire to see Maloney “continue to grow as a magnificent human being.”
Reflecting on her Olympic journey, Maloney acknowledged the challenges she faced and expressed gratitude for the support she received from sponsors and her community. She credited her faith for keeping her calm before races and said she learned valuable lessons from the experience.
Looking ahead, Maloney shared her determination to secure a medal at the 2028 Olympics. Her performance and positive attitude have already inspired many in St Vincent and the Grenadines, with the government’s recognition highlighting the nation’s pride in her accomplishments.
