T&T’S PM ROWLEY ANNOUNCES RESIGNATION

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley of Trinidad and Tobago has announced his intention to resign before the end of the current term of his People’s National Movement (PNM), which concludes in August this year.

Dr. Rowley, 75, who has served in public office for 45 years, shared the news during a recent address in Tobago, marking the end of a political journey that began in 1981.

Rowley, reflecting on a career that saw him rise from humble beginnings planting grass on Tobago’s Hope Estate to leading the nation through some of its most challenging moments. Under his leadership, the PNM secured victory in the 2020 general elections, winning 22 of 41 parliamentary seats.

Dr. Rowley expressed pride in mentoring young leaders within the PNM, ensuring the party’s continuity after his departure.

During his tenure, Rowley navigated significant national challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed relief over recent Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reports that dismissed fears of another outbreak.

However, Rowley also lamented the increasing hostility in political discourse.

As the PNM prepares for its next chapter, Rowley’s departure marks the end of an era in Trinidad and Tobago’s political landscape, with his contributions leaving an indelible mark on the nation.
