CALVIN SMITH WINS THE FIRST EVENT OF THE 2024 BVICF SEASON

The 2024 BVI Cycling Federation (BVICF) season commenced with high energy and competitive spirit in the first of the two Highway Challenges last weekend, with Calvin Smith riding away victorious with a time of 1:34:47.

The challenging route, spanning 33 miles for A Class riders and a single lap for B Class riders, showcased the prowess of top BVI cyclists.

Five seasoned riders, including perennial favourite Phillipe Leroy, Calvin Smith, Amory Jervis, Shane Donovan, and the return of Barry “Mr. Cycling” Jones, lined up at the start by The Boys Gas Station in Sea Cows Bay which was also the sponsor of the event. Visiting cyclist Jose Jimenez added an extra layer of competition to the mix.

Despite the absence of notable A Class riders, the field was set for an intense race. According to the race report by Phoenix Media, Jones initiated the fireworks with a strong attack shortly after Pieces of Eight, creating a substantial gap. However, Leroy, leading the pack, swiftly closed in on Jones during a high-paced attack at Prospect Reef.

Leroy’s dominance continued, with an explosive attack at Manual Reef, distancing the field. Both Smith and Jervis caught up with Leroy, leaving the riders contemplating whether Jones was catching up with Leroy as he couldn’t assert his usual dominance.

The pace fluctuated throughout the race, with various attacks and regroupings. Jones initiated another attack, and despite a flat tyre causing Leroy to drop out of contention, the race remained competitive.

Smith’s well-timed acceleration led him to victory by a mere 2 seconds over Jones who clocked 1:34:49, with Jervis securing a commendable third-place time of 1:34:50 despite mechanical challenges. Jimenez and Shane Donovan completed the top five, while Leroy finished in sixth.

Stephen Emmanuel as the lone B Class rider finished his race in 1:02:00.
