Wolues FC secured the Women’s National League title with a narrow 1-0 victory over Avengers FC at the Greenland Football Field in East End on Sunday.
The match’s lone goal, a masterstroke from Eva Carey, was enough to propel Wolues to glory in a game that demanded both resilience and finesse.
The decisive moment came early, in the 15th minute, with a goal that exemplified teamwork and precision. The play began from the Wolues’ defensive end, smoothly transitioning through the midfield before Captain Zolita Bamford delivered a perfectly weighted through ball to Carey. With skill and composure, Carey took a touch and launched a powerful shot into the top left corner, beyond the desperate reach of the Avengers’ goalkeeper, who managed to get her fingertips to the ball but couldn’t prevent the goal.
Head Coach John Reilly was full of praise for his team, emphasizing the collective effort that defined their season. “It was a team win from start to finish,” he stated.
Reilly singled out goalkeeper Giada Palladino, who secured her eighth clean sheet of the season.
“Her match awareness at such a young age is so important to us. Her ability to sprint off her line, her shot-stopping skills, and her poise in claiming high balls gave our back line the confidence to play our trademark build-up game.”
Captain Zolita Bamford echoed Reilly’s sentiments, highlighting the team’s elation and the significance of their hard-fought victory.
“I am proud of all the players and particularly our younger girls who coped with all the added pressure of a final…It was a great feeling to lift the Trophy and hopefully the momentum for women’s football will continue,” Bamford stated.
The future looks promising for Wolues FC, whose young talent is nurtured through various developmental programmes such as the Saturday morning Manatees Youth Football programme, the Cedar School afterschool football programmes, and the successful Soccer Sisters programme on Thursday afternoons. The team’s younger players are already gearing up for their next challenge, a tournament in St. Croix at the end of June.
