BVI ATHLETES EXCEL AT INTERNATIONAL EVENTS

The British Virgin Islands’ top athletes made significant strides on the international and regional sports stage this past weekend in various competitions.

In athletics, Olympian Kyron McMaster delivered a stellar performance at the Wanda Diamond League Bauhaus Gala in Stockholm, Sweden, on Sunday. McMaster ran a season’s best time of 48.05 seconds in the 400m hurdles, securing second place.

His time was an improvement over his previous best of 48.49 seconds at the Bislett Games in Oslo on May 30. In Stockholm, McMaster finished ahead of CJ Allen (48.12) but was outpaced by Alison dos Santos, who claimed victory with a time of 47.01.

Also competing on the track was national record holder Rikkoi Brathwaite in the Edwin Moses Legends Meet in Atlanta, where he clocked 10.21 seconds in the 100 meters. His performance earned him a fifth-place finish at the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver event. The race was won by American Pjai Austin, who finished in 10.03 seconds.

On the field, Olympian Chantel Malone showcased her skills in the long jump at the 2024 Maximum Velocity Athletics HP #1 at the Chula Vista Elite Training Center in California. Malone achieved a distance of 6.62 meters, tying for fourth place.

Her leap was an improvement from her previous best of 6.54 meters at the Pure Athletics Sprint meet in May. Malone continues her quest to meet the Paris 2024 qualifying mark of 6.86 meters.

Meanwhile, in the shot put, Djimon Gumbs threw a distance of 19.28 meters to place second at the Music City Track Carnival in Tennessee.

Olympian Eldred Henry followed closely, finishing third with a best throw of 18.83 meters in his third meet of the season. The professional portion of this meet was part of the World Athletics Continental Tour, Bronze level.
