Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred added a second Olympic medal to her tally by securing a silver in the Women’s 200 meters on Tuesday.
Competing out of lane 8, Alfred, who recently won gold in the 100 meters, had a strong start but was surpassed by the USA’s Gabrielle Thomas approximately 100 meters from the finish. Thomas clinched the gold with a time of 21.83 seconds, while Alfred clocked 22.08 seconds to take the silver.
Alfred’s remarkable performance adds to a notable list of Caribbean achievements at the Paris Olympic Games. Dominica’s Thea LaFond made history by winning gold in the triple jump on Saturday, marking the country’s first-ever Olympic medal. Jamaica’s Shanieka Ricketts took silver in the same event, contributing to Jamaica’s medal tally.
In the Men’s 100 meters, Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson claimed a silver medal in a thrilling race against American Noel Lyles. Both athletes recorded identical times of 9.79 seconds, but Lyles edged out Thompson by five thousandths of a second when the times were rounded down.
Jamaica continued its success in the long jump, with Wayne Pinnock earning a silver medal with a best jump of 8.36 meters.
Grenada’s Lindon Victor also made headlines by capturing a bronze medal in the Men’s Decathlon, finishing with a total of 8711 points.
Additionally, Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell made history in the Men’s Shot Put final, becoming the first Jamaican man to win an Olympic medal in a throwing event.
These impressive performances underscore the strength and talent of Caribbean athletes on the global stage, bringing pride and recognition to their respective nations.
