TROPICAL STORM WARNING FOR BVI AS POTENTIAL CYCLONE APPROACHES

The Territory is bracing for potential tropical storm conditions as Potential Tropical Cyclone Five approaches the region.

The National Hurricane Center issued a Tropical Storm Warning for the territory Monday, indicating tropical storm conditions are expected within 36 hours.

Forecasters predict tropical storm-force winds could impact the area as early as Tuesday evening and continue through Wednesday. Rainfall of 4 to 6 inches may cause flooding, while storm surge could elevate coastal seas 1 to 3 feet above normal, creating dangerous waves and surf.

The disturbance is expected to cross portions of the Leeward Islands late Monday night or Tuesday before approaching the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico Tuesday evening.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts. Forecasters expect the system to strengthen into a tropical depression later Monday or overnight, potentially becoming a tropical storm as it nears the Leeward Islands.

The National Hurricane Center estimates a 90% chance of formation within the next 48 hours and seven days.

Residents and visitors in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather updates and follow guidance from local authorities.
