GOVERNOR PRUCE ISSUES ALL CLEAR FOR BVI

His Excellency Governor Daniel Pruce addressed the Virgin Islands this afternoon, announcing that the immediate threat from Hurricane Ernesto has passed, and it is now safe for residents to begin moving about.

Following consultations with the National Emergency Operations Centre and Premier Dr. the Honourable Natalio Wheatley, Governor Pruce confirmed that the “All Clear” has been issued, signaling the resumption of normal activities across the Territory.

Governor Pruce advised that while it is generally safe to travel, residents should continue to exercise caution.

“Motorists should expect ponding on the road and possible debris. Please drive with extra care,” he urged. He also reminded mariners that rough seas associated with Ernesto are likely to persist over the next few days, and to proceed with caution when venturing out.

The governor provided an overview of the storm’s impact, noting that Ernesto brought sustained winds of 48 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 80 miles per hour. The territory experienced significant rainfall, with averages of five inches and some areas receiving up to eight inches. This led to widespread flooding, downed trees, and property damage across the islands.

“Many have been impacted by flooding and will need time to repair and restore their homes or businesses,” Governor Pruce stated, acknowledging the challenges faced by residents in the storm’s aftermath. He urged the community to check on friends and neighbours, particularly those who may be vulnerable during this time.

Governor Pruce also provided an update on the restoration of essential services. He noted that power has already been restored in Road Town and Central Tortola, but he cautioned that it may take some time before full service is resumed throughout the territory. He called for patience as systems gradually come back online.
