DDM WARNS OF HEAVY RAIN AND FLOODING RISKS FOR BVI

Residents across the British Virgin Islands are being urged to prepare for potential flooding as forecasters warn of heavy rainfall that could dump up to eight inches of rain over the Territory.

The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) issued a release on Wednesday afternoon, warning of deteriorating conditions beginning Thursday and lasting through the weekend.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services says a tropical wave combined with a weak trough system will bring unstable conditions to the region. While shower activity was limited early Wednesday, meteorologists predict a significant increase in rainfall by Wednesday night.

“Flooding is possible over the next 72 hours,” the DDM stated in their advisory. Officials are particularly concerned about areas with poor drainage, potential ponding on roads, and runoff from hillside areas.

Marine conditions are expected to worsen significantly, with forecasters predicting northeasterly swells up to 5 feet. Small craft operators are being advised to exercise extreme caution, and beach activities are discouraged until conditions improve.

The DDM is advising residents to:

  • Take immediate steps to protect property
  • Avoid flood-prone areas
  • Stay away from beaches and coastal areas
  • Monitor official updates closely
  • Be prepared for conditions to change at short notice
