Orenthal James “OJ” Simpson, the former American football star who captivated the world during his highly publicized murder trial and subsequent acquittal, has died at the age of 76, his family announced on Wednesday.
Simpson, who rose to fame as a talented running back and actor before his life was upended by accusations of brutal violence, passed away from cancer, according to a statement from his relatives.
“On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace”, the statement said.
